Sardinia’s Su Gologone provides an authentic stay…

Sardinia is well known as a paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean. Obviously, its sunny coasts and its white and sandy beaches are the main tourist attractions and there is  endless things to discover.

A delightful place to stay is at the hotel Su Gologone.  Surrounded by blue sky, red geraniums, hydrangeas, bougainvillea and prickly pears this hotel is all about tradition.

Showcasing the art and culture of this distinctive part of the world – every detail expresses the authenticity of this land – it incorporates the every essence of Sardinian culture: untainted nature, ancient customs, time-honoured cuisine and great hospitality.  You will be surprised and enchanted to come face-to-face with period costumes, tapestries and antique ceramics – testaments to a little-known craft tradition that is unrivalled in terms of its variety, originality and refinement.

Highlights of a stay include:

  • In the evening experience the hotels terrace with its violet furnishings. Called the "terrace of dreams" because of the spectacular view it affords over Mount Corrasi,  here, in 1966, John Huston shot a number of scenes for his epic film The Bible: In the Beginning with Ava Gardner, Peter O’Toole and Franco Nero.

  • From May to September, one night a week the hotel hosts stargazers who meet up with guests and describe the stars and planets with the help of telescopes and special video cameras. It all gets going at around 10pm, but the session can go on and on for as long as the visibility allows – a 3AM finish is not unheard of!

  • Experience the Su Gogolone Spring: Located 500 metres from the hotel, the spring is one of the favourite destinations of guests and visitors.  It is considered a national monument.  Its imposing mass of water gushes out from a deep, vertiginous ravine, affording a spectacle of quite extraordinary beauty. All of the water used at the hotel, restaurant, spa and swimming pool comes from this spring.

  • Take part in the craft workshops at the hotel – embroidery, fabrics, pottery and objects made of wood and wrought iron – let by the skilled hands of master weavers and ingenious artisans you can even purchase some of their pieces which are limited edition or one-offs.

  • After dinner, you can sample 15 different grappa’s, mostly Sardinian, along with liqueurs made from herbs and berries, accompanied once a week (usually Friday or Saturday) by the canti a tenores – polyphonic Sardinian folk singing (Unesco has declared this type of singing to be an important aspect of the world's heritage.)

  • Take an excursion arranged through the hotel.  Following the ancient shepherds' paths, through forests of holm oak with small clearings via bicycle, you will enter canyons, visit archaeological sites or find yourself on stunning beaches of white sand, looking out to the crystalline sea. The excursions are perfect for experts and amateurs alike, and can be experienced on bicycles or mountain bikes, on foot, on horseback or in a kayak. Guides are available to accompany you should you want one, or you may prefer to head out on your own.  Alternatively try an excursion in a Land Rover, the natural world that surrounds the hotel provides a plethora of opportunities for memorable trips – tours lasting a few hours or a whole day can be arranged.

  • Visit The Nuraghe, beehive-like stone dwellings from the bronze age, that can only be found in Sardinia. The exact use of these structures is unknown, but many believe that they were either used as religious temples, or military strongholds. The most well known Nuraghe is Nuraxi su Barumini, which has been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Barumini is located at approximately 60 kilometers North of the Sardinian capital Cagliari.

  • Enjoy the view of Bastione San Remy. The Sardinian capital Cagliari was built on seven hills. The oldest part of the city, Castello, lies on top of one of these hills, resulting in a stunning view of the Gulf of Cagliari, or Angels Gulf. Especially from Bastione San Remy, which was built in the typical local white lime-stone, you can see most other parts of Cagliari, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. When you have reached the top of Bastione San Remy, the beautiful Romanesque Cathedral of Gagliari is within walking distance, making the climb even more worthwhile.

  • Spend a day at The Costa Smeralda, in the North-East of Sardinia.  This is the favourite holiday destination of some of the wealthiest people in the world. Ever since Prince Aga Khan visited this region in the 60′s, many celebrities have chosen the Sardinian Emerald Coast to spend their vacation. This makes finding an affordable hotel during the summer months relatively difficult, but the side effect is that there’s a lot to see when you’re strolling along the shoreline.
