My Journey of a Lifetime…to Palau – Micronesia by Molly Blaisdell

There is no place in the world like Palau, Micronesia…

Located in the westernmost corner of Micronesia, Palau is an archipelago of more than 586 islands with about 20,000 inhabitants. Consistently ranked as one of the world's best dive destinations, Palau is the ultimate paradise for the adventurous traveler, boasting some of the most spectacular water features and beaches as well as the world famous Rock Islands and Jellyfish Lake.

With 1,450 species of fish and 500 species of coral, some have called Palau the "8th Natural Wonder of the World", while others have identified Palau as "One of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World." For more information about Palau, please visit www.visit-palau.com.

Hidden Spot:

It is in this Micronesian paradise that I find my “temple,” Jellyfish Lake, a place that many claim is the only place in the world in which humans can safely swim with jellyfish.  And, it is in this “temple” that I find myself totally immersed in my own private thoughts, though surrounded by visitors from all corners of the globe.

This intriguing lake and its “residents,” namely the golden jellyfish (known as Mastigias) and the moon jellyfish (known as Aurelia), is a true rarity and has earned its distinction as the only place in the world where humans can safely swim with these typically dangerous creatures.  Why is this possible?! Over the course of millennia, the formation of the lake transitioned from a bay, connected to the ocean, to an enclosed body of water wherein the resident jellyfish have become virtually stingless because they are no longer threatened by any enemies.  Due to this evolution, adventure seekers have the rare opportunity to swim amongst these unique water creatures. Molly's Travel Tips:

–       While Scuba Diving and Jellyfish Lake are the main attractions in Palau, make time for just completely unplugging and finding a remote island to just chill and read a book or enjoy the company of your companion.

–       Since Palau is a far distance from most anywhere, it is my recommendation that you plan a stopover in Hawaii or Asia on your way…to break up the airline travel.

–       If you are a luxury kind of traveler, be sure to book one of the resorts in Koror.  For those that are more adventurous, look into the variety of accommodations offered on other islands…everything from self-sustaining island huts to B+Bs and hostels.
